1,100 athletes will compete at the Paralympics in three types of events in the Olympic stadium: Track, which includes sprints, medium to long distance running and relay; Field, including throwing and jumping competitions; and Road; featuring just the marathon.

Classification:
Athletes are grouped according to the level of impact that their impairment has on their event-specific performance. In each grouping, the lower the number, the greater the impact the impairment has on the individual's ability to compete.
11-13 - Visually impaired athletes
20 - Intellectual impaired athletes
31-38 - Athletes with cerebral palsy, with classes 31-34 using a wheelchair
40-46 - Athletes with a loss of a limb or limb deficiency
51 - Wheelchair racers or field athletes who compete from a sitting position
