SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Jonathan Woo is following in the footsteps of the Republic’s top amateur golfers who have since turned pro.
Like Mardan Mamat and Quincy Quek before him, Woo blazed a trail to become the fifth Singaporean to win the Putra Cup individual trophy.
"It’s very humbling because a lot of these guys have been household names, like Mardan... And these guys, they were really good amateur players before they turned pro, so it’s always good to follow in their footsteps... It shows that you’re kind of on the right track to becoming a better golfer," said Woo.
Known as the official Southeast Asian team golf championship, Woo carded an impressive six—under—par 66 in the final round in Jakarta for his biggest—ever win.
The 21—year—old University of Oregon student will next lead Singapore at the World Team Amateur Championships in Turkey at the end of month.
"The event itself is a really prestigious event... The biggest amateur event in the world. So I’m looking forward to playing with the guys there," said Woo.
