Olympics: Singapore’s paddler Feng reaches semis; Wang fails

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Feng Tianwei has reached the semifinals of the table tennis women’s singles event in London Olympics.
Feng, seeded 6th, upset third seed and nemesis, Kim Kyung—Ah of South Korea, in six games in the quarterfinals to qualify.
The Singaporean beat Kim 13—11, 11—7, 4—11, 11—6, 10—12, 12—10.
Feng is now Singapore’s only hope for the nation’s first individual gold medal in table tennis, after compatriot Wang Yuegu lost her quarter—final match.
Wang lost 1—4 (11—8, 5—11, 4—11, 8—11, 4—11) to Japan’s fourth seed Kasumi Ishikawa in less than 24 minutes.
Feng will play against world champion Ding Ning of China in the semifinals.
The other semifinal encounter will be between China’s Li Xiaoxia and Kasumi Ishikawa.
