There is a well-known practice among football teams to hire popular ex-players as managers in a bid to boost morale. However, the old adage that managers or players should not return to their old stomping ground rings true for several of such instances, as some of them have lost the iconic status gained in their first spells.

Although these managers received a hero’s welcome upon their return to their old clubs, some enjoyed differing success, with a few leaving under acrimonious circumstances. We reckon they should not have allowed their hearts to rule their heads when it came to making that seemingly fitting return.
