Barcelona defender Pique was first to be substituted after only 11 minutes as he failed to recover after landing awkwardly in an aerial challenge with Costa and was replaced by Marc Bartra.

Costa, Atletico's leading scorer with 33 goals in all competitions this season, had been a doubt before the game due to a knee problem which had seen him leave  his side's final training session early on Monday.

However, the Atletico frontman pulled his right hamstring on the half hour mark and was replaced by Diego Ribas.
