First contested on 13 May, 1902 – a 3-1 victory for Barcelona – the term El Clásico was originally reserved for just league fixtures played between the two clubs in Spanish football’s great duopoly. The contest grew in prominence as the rivalry between the clubs escalated, transcending the football field and spilling over into politics and encapsulating the enmity between Spanish nationalists in Madrid and the Catalan capital of Barcelona.

The name is now used to refer to any meeting of the two – such as Wednesday's cup final meeting.
