The hosts lost their final four wickets for 45 runs in 11.5 overs on Sunday after resuming on 320 for six.
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews took Test-best figures of four wickets for 44 runs, with fellow seamer Shaminda Eranga taking four for 93.
Matt Prior was 27 not out after Australia-born opener Sam Robson had made 127 -- his maiden Test century -- on Saturday.
The two-Test series is level after the opening match at Lord's was drawn on Monday.
