England were set a target of 350 to win the second Test after bowling Sri Lanka out for 457 in their second innings on the fourth day at Headingley on Monday.

That left England needing to set a new national record if they were to emerge victorious, with their highest fourth-innings total to win a Test the 332 they managed against Australia in 1928/29.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews made 169, his Test-best score, with Liam Plunkett taking four for 112 to give the fast bowler nine wickets for the match on his Yorkshire home ground.

The two-match series is level at 0-0 after the first Test at Lord's was drawn last Monday.
