The 30-year-old, capped 10 times including all five games at the 2010 World Cup finals where then coach Dunga selected him at left back rather than his preferred position, cost the Italian club 1.1million euros ($1.5million) to take him on loan, while they have the option to buy him outright for 3.5million euros at the end of the season.

Bastos, who played under Garcia at Ligue 1 side Lille from 2007-09 before moving to rivals Lyon, is Roma's second signing during the transfer window as they seek to haul back table-topping Juventus, who have an eight point lead over them.

While they sold American international midfielder Michael Bradley to Major League Soccer side Toronto for $10million (7.4million euros) earlier this month they also captured on loan Belgian international Radja Nainggolan from fellow Serie A team Cagliari.
