Paderborn promoted to Bundesliga, Fuerth into play-off
Modest SC Paderborn were promoted to the top tier of the German Bundesliga for the first time on Sunday as Greuther Fuerth were forced to settle for a play-off place.
Paderborn, from North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, won 2-1 at home to VfR Aalen on the final day of the season to clinch second place behind champions Cologne, an excellent second half to the campaign seeing them finish two points clear of Fuerth.
Fuerth - who count amongst their fan-base the former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger - beat Sandhausen 2-0 but must now face a two-legged play-off against Hamburg as they attempt to return to the top flight at the first time of asking.
Hamburg, who are the only club to have participated in every Bundesliga season, only narrowly avoided automatic relegation on Saturday.
The first leg of their tie will be played on Thursday in Hamburg, with the return to come next Sunday, May 18.
