Gombau's two-year extension, which was finalised Thursday, comes as the Reds prepare to take on defending champions Central Coast Mariners in the A-League play-offs in Gosford on Saturday.

Gombau, the former Academy coach at Barcelona, has impressed pundits and fans with the playing style he has implemented at Adelaide since taking charge this season.

The Spaniard was recently voted to lead the A-League All Stars against Italian giants Juventus in a friendly in Sydney on August 10.

"This contract extension gives Josep and the club the opportunity to consolidate and build upon the work already undertaken this season," Adelaide United chairman Greg Griffin said.

"The entire playing squad and support staff have embraced the desire for Josep to extend his terms at the Adelaide United."
