Thohir heralds 'new' direction for Inter
Inter Milan owner and president Erick Thohir indicated his hopes for an upturn in fortunes after the Serie A giants signed defender Danilo D'Ambrosio and midfielder Hernanes on Friday.
D'Ambrosio joined the Nerazzurri early on Friday from Torino but by far the club's biggest acquisition was Lazio's highly-rated Brazilian international midfielder Hernanes.
The 28-year-old Hernanes, who cried as he left Lazio's training ground on Thursday, joined Inter on a four-and-a-half year deal worth a reported 18m euros ($24.2million).
Thohir has seen Inter struggle to live up to their potential in recent months with Walter Mazzarri's side taking only eight points from a possible 27 in their last nine games.
The Indonesian businessman, however, is hoping his double acquisition will spark a turnaround.
"I am very excited about our acquisitions of Hernanes and Danilo D'Ambrosio," Thohir told the club's website www.inter.it.
"I believe both players provide us with much needed depth and balance. We welcome them to the Inter family and look forward to their positive contributions on the field and in the locker room."
Thohir had hinted shortly after his November takeover that he would limit spending and look to promote a culture of bringing youth players into the senior side.
The purchase of Hernanes should allay fans' fears of a thrifty approach to the market, but Thohir insisted he would not abandon another of his early-season priorities -- "growth and stability".
"We will continue to review all aspects of the club," he added.
"As we continue this movement in a new direction, I have challenged our organisation to take a long view toward growth and stability, building a new foundation for success on solid ground.
"We firmly believe this approach will strengthen Inter's status as one of the best clubs in the world."
Inter, the last Italian team to win the Champions League, in 2010, currently sit fifth in Serie A, 11 points behind third-placed Napoli who occupy the third and final Champions League qualifying spot.
