IndyCar unveils 18-race 2014 schedule
Helio Castroneves and Scott Dixon lead a pack of cars at the start of the IZOD IndyCar Series Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix Of Houston Race #2, at Reliant Park in Houston, Texas, on October 6, 2013
The race on the 2.343-mile (3.77-kilometer), 14-turn course at Indy -- more known as a pinnacle of oval circuit racing -- will be held on May 10.
The schedule will also feature double-headers at Detroit, Houston and Toronto.
The season will kick off at St. Petersburg, Florida, on March 30.
Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, will host the season finale on August 30.
"The 2014 schedule reflects a more condensed North American calendar to increase the consistency with our race weekends," Mark Miles, chief executive of IndyCar parent company Hulman & Co, said on Thursday.
"We'll be building momentum throughout the season toward crowning our champion on Labor Day weekend."
Miles added that the street course race in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which has been contested the past four years, may yet return in 2014 but is not part of the schedule so far.
The road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will use portions of the famed Brickyard oval -- where the Indianapolis 500 will be contested on May 25.
The 2013 IndyCar series will conclude on Saturday at Fontana.
New Zealand's Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganassi Racing will seek his third series title, with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves of Brazil going into the season final 25 points behind.
