McIlroy lifts himself into back-nine PGA showdown
Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland hits his second shot on the fifth hole during the final round of the 96th PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on August 10, 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky - by David Cannon
McIlroy hit his approach 274 yards and knocked in a seven-foot eagle putt to reach 14-under par, one off the pace set by Americans Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler and Sweden's Henrik Stenson.
World number one McIlroy, who won the British Open three weeks ago, was one-over on the front nine to stumble back while rivals charged on a rain-soaked Valhalla course.
Mickelson sank a 10-foot birdie putt at 11 to reach 15-under, then dropped a 28-foot par putt at the 12th to keep his share of the lead.
Stenson had five birdies on the front nine and a two-foot birdie tap-in at 13.
Fowler dropped a 28-foot birdie putt at the 10th to reach 15-under.
