Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan

As unlikely as you'd think a scandal in figure skating could be, in 1994, skater Tonya Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt hired Shane Stant to break Nancy Kerrigan’s leg so she would be unable to perform in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. After a practice, Stant hit Kerrigan, bruising her leg. She was unable to skate in the competition, and Harding won. They were both chosen for the 1994 Olympic team. Kerrigan finished with a silver medal while Harding placed eighth. The scandal caused viewership to be the highest ever. Harding has maintained innocence to knowing about the attacks, but was charged with conspiring to hinder prosecution of the attackers.
