At a flag presentation ceremony yesterday, Team Singapore received not just the national colours, but also more than 60 Galaxy S III smartphones sponsored by Samsung. The phones will be distributed to athletes and key team officials.

The team also got mobile and data cards from SingTel, which will let them access their email, Facebook and Skype in London.

Hurdler Dipna Lim Prasad, 21, plans to put the phone to good use Tweeting, Facebooking and taking pictures of London and the opening ceremony. If she has time, she might even do a little celeb-stalking and post her catches online.

She said that at previous sporting events like the SEA Games and World Indoor Championships, it was not always easy or cheap to call home.

"The smartphone will help us to save cost and keep in touch with loved ones at home," Prasad said.

Paralympics sailor Desiree Lim, 55, hopes to take advantage of the phone's free data roaming to go online and contact her family via email.

"It's a very good phone, very much sought after, my colleagues are all going after it," said the Skud 18 sailor, who will be partnering Jovin Tan, 25, in the two-person event.
