Competitors in the marathon, race walking events and the cycling road race will finish their races on The Mall in the shadow of Buckingham Palace. The Mall runs from the palace to Trafalgar Square and, as a ceremonial route, it has been the site of many royal celebrations over the years. For 2012, The Mall takes centre stage twice, with the Olympics taking place shortly after the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Watching the events that finish on The Mall is free - although tickets were sold for some of the viewing areas near the finish line.
