Chelsea gained a measure of revenge this morning by beating Manchester United 5-4 after extra time in the Capital One Cup fourth round.

The league leaders came from behind in a second meeting between the top-two clubs in four days, following Sunday's charged Premier League encounter which ended 3-2 in United's favour.

Both Alex Ferguson and Roberto Di Matteo made wholesale changes to their sides for this understandably lesser tournament, but the game was no less dramatic.

There were no fewer than three penalties, plus other claims, as referee Lee Mason flashed the yellow card nine times.

Ryan Giggs, David Luiz (pen) and then Javier Hernandez put the error-ridden contest 2-1 to United at the break, before Gary Cahill equalized for the Blues. Nani then scored what would have been a memorable winner, but super-sub Eden Hazard's penalty five minutes into added time handed the home side a lifeline.

The tide seemed to have turn and Daniel Sturridge and Ramires wrapped up the tie in the extra 30. Giggs (pen) narrowed the difference in the final minute.

This high-scoring match followed Arsenal's 12-goal thriller with Reading a day earlier.
