This year has been full of fantastic goals, especially in the last few weeks, but Aston Villa’s goal of the year came on the 6 April on an away trip to the Britannia Stadium.

In a game that Matthew Lowton will never forget, the former Sheffield United right-back never hit a ball more sweetly than he did that day. The ball was cleared by Stoke’s Charlie Adam to Lowton who, from 30 yards out, brought the ball down on his chest and rifled a right-footed volley past the despairing Asmir Begovic.

As if the goal wasn’t enough, the 3-1 win over the Potters kick-started Villa’s survival push.
