Everton: Leighton Baines v Newcastle – 2 January

On a cold Wednesday night at St James' Park, the Toffees were hoping to get their first win of 2013 and eventually they did thanks to a magnificent equaliser from Leighton Baines, a strike that is surely Everton’s goal of the year.
Baines looked up at Tim Krul from 30 yards away with the intent of scoring, not crossing. There was no stopping him as he stepped back, shot and scored a powerful free-kick.
Baines’ goal showed the ‘no surrender’ spirit that has been a defining trait of Everton's year. This has carried on into this season with the Toffees picking up seven out of a possible 12 points against last season’s top four sides.
