Singapore mixed martial arts standouts Syafiq Samad and May Ooi (pictured) were victorious at Rebel Fighting Championship’s Battle Royale, while bantamweight legend Miguel Torres booked his place in the tournament semi-finals.

The 1 Aug event at Suntec Convention Centre drew a crowd of around 5,000, many of them out to cheer on the three local fighters. Mohamed Ashraf was up first but succumbed to Australia’s Suman Mokhtarian with several mistakes costing him.

Syafiq, a Muay Thai champion, professional boxer and national wrestler, then redeemed some pride by knocking out his flamboyant American opponent Kenny Thompson. Former national swimmer Ooi capped off the night when she stopped Philippines’ Sharma Devaiah.

In the main event of the eight-man tournament, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star Torres earned a split decision over a distraught Takahiro Ashida. He will next face fellow American Will Chope, also of UFC fame, with Yojiro Uchimura and Michael Tobin facing off in the other semi-final.
