Mok Ying Rong, sister of Singapore’s top marathon runner Ying Ren, showed at this year’s Sundown Marathon that both talent and hard work run in the family, winning the women’s 21km half marathon.

On a night of strong local showing, the physiotherapy student was one of seven Singaporeans who made the podium at the country’s main night run.

“I was really exhausted. I just told myself to be really focused throughout the whole run. I couldn’t let my mind get distracted,” she said.

“The key is always optimism and working towards the end goal.”

Up to 30,000 runners participated in this edition, themed “Bring on the Night”. Several sections of the race were called “Glow Zones” for their special light works, while the Benjamin Sheares Bridge was included in the route for the first time.

As part of the event’s charity outreach, handcyclists also joined the 42km full marathon and a sprint category.
