The 29-year-old Real Madrid star lines up in a three-man attack alongside striker Hugo Almeida and right-winger Nani at Salvador’s Arena Fonte Nova stadium despite labouring with a thigh and knee injury recently.
Germany coach Joachim Loew has opted to switch captain Philipp Lahm into the defensive midfield alongside Sami Khedira and named four centre-backs.
Lahm takes the place of vice-captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, who is named on the bench as he lacks match fitness after suffering from tendinitis of the knee.
Veteran striker Miroslav Klose also starts on the bench with the 36-year-old just one short of retired Brazil star Ronaldo’s record of 15 goals at World Cup finals.
Loew has opted for a three-man attack including Mario Goetze, Mesut Ozil and Thomas Mueller.
