Ovechkin, who is the face of Russian hockey, did not join the other National Hockey League stars on a charter flight back to North America so he could remain in Sochi with his father, Mikhail.
"His father had a heart attack while he was in Sochi," said Sergey Kocharov, director of communications with Ovechkin's NHL team.
"Ovechkin's father suffered the heart attack shortly after Russia's game against Slovakia."
"But he (Ovechkin) was not informed until after the elimination game against Finland (on Wednesday). He is with his father right now. He will remain with him. We're taking it day by day."
Ovechkin's Russian national team was eliminated in the quarter-finals from the 2014 Sochi Olympics after losing to Finland.
