Stosur hands Ivanovic repeat dose of Moscow misery
Austria's Samantha Stosur returns the ball to Serbia's Ana Ivanovic during the WTA Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow on October 18, 2013
World number 19 Stosur, the champion in Osaka last week, had defeated Ivanovic, the fourth seed, in the semi-finals in 2012 and she maintained her stranglehold over the Serb player with an 85-minute win.
"Probably having won here last year, I certainly had a few things in my head that I wanted to try to do today against her," Stosur said.
"And right from the start it was kind of working and my confidence kind of built, and I was able to keep going and play well till the end."
Stosur will take on eighth-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat second seed Roberta Vinci of Italy, 6-2, 6-3, for a place in the final.
"I'm pleased with my performance at the tournament as I'm playing better and better in every match here," said Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam title winner.
The other semi-final will pit fifth seed Simona Halep of Romania against Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Halep experienced few troubles against Russia's Alisa Kleybanova in a 6-1, 6-1 win while Pavlyuchenkova was in command against Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova, winning 6-0, 6-4.
In the men's event, French top seed Richard Gasquet remained on course for a spot in the ATP World Tour Finals as he advanced to the semis with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Russian wildcard Teimuraz Gabashvili.
"I made an early break and it was very important as I was in control after that," Gasquet said.
"In general I played well. I was a little bit more aggressive than yesterday. I served well and didn't miss much."
Gasquet will next face Croatia's Ivo Karlovic who hit 11 aces during his 51-minute win over Russian wildcard Karen Khachanov, 6-4, 6-0.
Italy's Andreas Seppi, the second seed and defending champion, barely broke sweat on his way to the semis as his French opponent Edouard Roger-Vasselin retired with a neck muscle injury after just 26 minutes and with the score at 5-2.
In Saturday's semi-finals, Seppi will face Mikhail Kukushkin, who ousted Andrei Golubev 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in a battle of Kazakhstan qualifiers.
