They didn't get anything in return
When it was still assumed that the Knicks would match any offer for Lin, Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks decided to move to New York to mentor him.

Now, they're losing Lin and replacing him with Raymond Felton, who doesn't have much upside. They didn't get any draft picks or players from the Rockets in a sign-and-trade deal, so they've essentially ended up giving him away for free.

Meanwhile, their new neighbours, the Brooklyn Nets, have created a contender-level roster. Even without getting Dwight Howard, their trade target, the Nets look like they'll be going to the eastern conference finals.
