The biggest transfer news of the week is that Manchester United have attempted to lift the club out of its current malaise with the signing of Spanish international Juan Mata from Premier League rivals Juan Mata.

While Red Devils fans may rejoice at the arrival of the 25-year-old, their celebrations may be muted by the news that the arrival of one world class player could be greeted by the departure of another: Wayne Rooney is rumoured to be off to Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are preparing a bid for the 28-year-old, according to British newspaper the Telegraph.

The La Liga club - along with Chelsea - have been linked with the striker, who's believed to have become unsettled at the club on two separate occasions in recent history. Madrid are now believed to be ready to test Rooney's commitment to United and the club's resolve with a big bid in the summer.

David Moyes was insistent when he took over that Rooney was not for sale but with United struggling to qualify for the Champions League, he may find it very difficult to keep the former Everton man happy in Manchester.
