Van Persie misses Manchester derby
Manchester United's Robin van Persie (left) scores during a UEFA match with Bayer Leverkusen, September 17, 2013. Van Persie was unexpectedly omitted from the Manchester United squad for their derby clash at Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Manager David Moyes said that the 30-year-old Dutch striker, United's top scorer last season with 30 goals, had sustained a groin injury, but could return in time for Wednesday's League Cup game at home to Liverpool.
"He had a groin strain during the week," Moyes told Sky Sports ahead of kick-off at the Etihad Stadium.
"I thought he might have been OK today, but not quite. We gave it every chance up until this morning.
"It is nothing serious. He could have a chance for Wednesday."
Danny Welbeck came into the team in Van Persie's place, with Ashley Young replacing Shinji Kagawa in the only other change to the side that beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in the Champions League in mid-week.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini brought striker Alvaro Negredo into his starting XI in place of Edin Dzeko, but Spanish midfielder David Silva, who has a thigh problem, was not included in the squad.
