Wild Oats XI wins seventh Sydney to Hobart honours
Wild Oats Xl (R) and Beau Geste sail out of the Heads at the start of an annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race on December 26, 2013
Organisers said the 100-footer crossed the finish line in the 628 nautical mile race down the east coast of southern Australia with a time of two days, six hours, seven minutes and 27 seconds.
Fellow supermaxi Perpetual Loyal, which had led the race early on Friday, was 33 nautical miles behind and Ragamuffin 100 in third position, more than 10 nautical miles further back.
The bigger yachts had struggled with the uncharacteristic lack of breeze in the early stages of the famous ocean race, and the time clocked by Wild Oats XI was well short of the course record she set in 2012.
But the boat clocked speeds of 28 knots as she powered down the Tasmania coast on Saturday afternoon after winds strengthened.
It was the seventh line honours victory for Wild Oats XI which also crossed the line first every year from 2005 to 2008 and in 2010 and 2012. It equals the performance of the boat named Morna and later Kurrewa IV which last won the race in 1960.
